Best of all, this Basic Cake Ball Truffle Recipe is so easy to change up for any season or occasion!

You may be more familiar with this recipe as a cake “truffle” or a cake pop. 

This is the recipe that launched me into dessert blogging! But not because I made this recipe and everyone loved it. It took me a few years to actually get around to make these after I discovered them. No, rather, this is the recipe that inspired my love for dessert blogs as a reader. Bakerella was the first dessert blogger (maybe the first blogger at all!) that I discovered and became obsessed with. All because she created art out of such a simple dessert… cake balls!

Basic Cake Ball (truffle) Recipe

Ingredients for Basic Cake Ball Truffle Recipe

• 1 box cake mix
• 1 cup water
• 1/3 cup oil
• 3 eggs
• 1 container (12 oz) store-bought frosting (like Duncan Hines, Pillsbury, Betty Crocker)
• 1 bag (14 to 16 oz) candy melts

Basic Cake Ball (truffle) Recipe

Directions

Make a cake for the filling.

  1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease 13×9-inch pan with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Make the cake mix as directed on box, using the eggs, oil,  and water. Pour into prepared pan. Bake as directed on box. Let cool completely.

Crumble the cake and add the frosting. Shape into balls.

  1. Crumble the cooled cake into large bowl. Add 1 container of frosting and mix well.
  2. Shape by 1 tablespoonfuls into balls. Place on a cookie sheet and freeze at least 15 minutes.

Basic Cake Ball (truffle) Recipe

Dip the balls in chocolate.

  1. In a microwavable bowl, microwave candy melts as directed on bag. Remove several cake balls from freezer at a time. 
  2. Dip each ball into the melted chocolate, allowing excess chocolate to drip off.
  3. Place on a piece of parchment paper or silicone baking mat to cool and harden.
